Federal Depository Library eBooks

The FDLP is now offering eBooks in addition to print, electronic (online and CD-ROM), and microformats:

To help meet the needs of the Federal Depository Library (FDL) community, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has made eBooks available in the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP). These titles are joining the growing number of online resources that have been a vital part of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) for over 20 years. Users can download GPO-provided files of eBooks free of charge, for use on various eBook reading devices. GPO’s goal is to expand and provide greater access to U.S. Federal Government content.

GPO eBooks are included in the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP).  Check out the eBooks FAQ page and then find one by browsing, or searching (use the search box on the eBooks page).

Note:  as of today, most of the eBooks are related to health and defense, although there is one on medicare:  Medicare & You.

 

Tax Forms Have Arrived

The IRS has a cool email service called IRS Tax Tips.  Today's email message is titled Four Ways to Get IRS Forms and Publications. 

Four Ways to Get IRS Forms and Publications

The IRS offers free tax forms and publications on many topics. Here are four easy ways to get the tax products you need from the IRS:

1. On the Internet.  Get everything you need 24 hours a day 7 days a week on IRS.gov. To view and download tax products, click on the ‘Forms and Pubs’ tab. Many products appear online before they’re available on paper.

2. Order by Phone.  Call 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676) Mondaythrough Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Hours of service in Alaska and Hawaii follow Pacific time. You’ll typically receive your order by mail within 7 to 10 days.

3. In IRS Offices.  Get the tax products you need at IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the country. Visit IRS.gov to find the nearest IRS Center. Select the ‘Help and Resources’ tab, and then click on ‘Contact Your Local IRS Office.’ Use the ‘Office Locator’ tool to search for the closest office by zip code. You can also select your state for a list of offices and services available at each office.

4. In Your Community.  Many libraries and post offices offer free tax forms during the tax filing season. Some libraries also have copies of common IRS publications.

The Nevada State Library and Archives orders basic tax forms in print for its patrons and as a courtesy provides forms to the Supreme Court Law Library.  The NSLA is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is located at 100 N. Stewart St. in Carson City, right next door to the Supreme Court building.  The Supreme Court Law Library is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. 

As of now, we are awaiting receipt of the 1040 and 1040EZ instructions and 1040 Schedule A.

Research Tip: How to Trace Federal Legislation - A Research Guide

There's a great post up today on In Custodia Legis, the blog of the Law Librarians of Congress, titled How to Trace Federal Legislation - A Research Guide.

Any given provision in the current U.S. Code may be the product of multiple acts passed over a long period of time. So, how do you unpack the provision and discover the different acts that gave rise to a particular section of the Code? Tracing legislation from the Code back to the bills, public laws, and Statutes at Large that created it may seem daunting for the uninitiated, but we hope this research guide will help simplify the process.

Pro Bono Week - 2013

Next week is Pro Bono Week.  Nevada Legal Services will be holding an Ask A Lawyer/Forms Clinic at the Law Library on Thursday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Additionally, Law Library staff will be at the legal aid fair held by Volunteer Attorneys for Northern Nevada on Saturday, November 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center.

Nevada Revised Statutes 2013 Reprint is HERE!

The Law Library has received the NRS 2013 Reprint (if you want to order one for yourself, contact LCB Publications).  The copies in Reference and Ready Reference have been filed and the set located in the Southwest corner of the library by Room 104/105 should be completed by October 24th.  The 2013 Reprint has not yet been posted on the LCB's website, but we hear it will be uploaded in the next few weeks. 

ETA - the Law Library archives one copy of each NRS reprint, so if you need a NRS section from some prior year, please contact the Reference Desk (775-684-1640 or reference@nvcourts.nv.gov ).
